Beaten fan’s lawyer says Dodgers should face suit

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:37 am

(Reuters) – The Los Angeles Dodgers fired 300 security staff before a fan was badly beaten at a game last year and the baseball team and its owner should face a lawsuit over the incident, the fan’s attorney said on Wednesday.

Documents will be filed on Wednesday that will show that a lack of security contributed to the attack on Bryan Stow, according to Stow’s attorney, Thomas Girardi of Girardi & Keese.

Stow was beaten nearly to death outside Dodger Stadium after the team’s opening day game on March 31. He and his family have filed a lawsuit in California for negligence, but that case was put on hold the by team’s bankruptcy filing in Delaware in June.

The team is now being auctioned and has attracted bids from some of the biggest names in business and sports such as billionaire hedge fund manager Steve Cohen, ex-Yankees and Dodgers manager Joe Torre and basketball great Magic Johnson.

The Dodgers asked the bankruptcy court to dismiss the Stow case because Stow cannot show that security staffing caused his injuries.

McDowell singing Match Play blues despite six birdies

(Reuters) – Former U.S. Open winner Graeme McDowell once again found himself on the wrong side of the vagaries of golf at the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship when he lost to Yang Yong-eun 2&1 on Wednesday.

Northern Irishman McDowell recorded six birdies in dazzling sunshine at Dove Mountain’s Ritz-Carlton Golf Club but he ran into a human buzz-saw as he was trumped by a red-hot Yang in the opening round.

The South Korean, who beat McDowell in the third round here last year, birdied four of the first seven holes before sealing victory with his seventh birdie of the day at the par-four 17th.

“You just run into the wrong guy on the wrong day, and you have got your work cut out. I didn’t take care of business, so I’m disappointed, yeah,” a frustrated McDowell told reporters.

Dawson eager to finish business in Hopkins rematch

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 1:00 am

(Reuters) – Evergreen boxing champion Bernard Hopkins will return to the ring in April for a rematch against Chad “Bad” Dawson, who vowed on Wednesday to finish the job he started in their controversial title fight last year.

The 47-year-old Hopkins (52-5-2), the oldest boxer to win a world title, will put his World Boxing Council light heavyweight belt on the line against fellow American Dawson (30-1) on April 28 at Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City.

Their bout last October in Los Angeles ended when Hopkins injured his shoulder in the second round in an awkward fall after Dawson lifted him off his feet as they engaged.

Dawson was initially declared the winner of the fight by technical knockout, but the bout was later ruled a no contest by the California State Athletic Commission.

(Reuters) – Top seed and defending champion Luke Donald crashed out of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship on Wednesday, losing 5&4 to late-entry Ernie Els in the opening round.

Donald won last year’s title with an imperious display, never trailing in any of his six matches, but he struggled against South African Els on a sun-splashed day at Dove Mountain’s Ritz-Carlton Golf Club.

The triple major champion made the most of an error-prone performance by the British world number one and sealed victory when he sank a 10-foot birdie putt at the par-four 14th.

“I’m not sure where to start,” a subdued Donald told reporters. “I just didn’t play very well. It’s disappointing. I’ve been working really hard.

Steelers’ Hines Ward in plea deal as DUI charge dropped

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 12:35 am

(Reuters) – U.S. prosecutors on Wednesday dropped a drunken driving charge against Pittsburgh Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward, who instead pleaded guilty to reckless driving and was sentenced to probation.

A Georgia judge ordered the National Football League star to serve 12 months of probation and perform 80 hours of community service, said Emily Gest, spokeswoman for the DeKalb County solicitor-general.

Ward, a 35-year-old, two-time Super Bowl champion, was arrested on charges of driving under the influence of alcohol in the early morning hours of July 9. In a statement released at the time, he denied being impaired.

Prosecutors dropped the drunken driving charge in exchange for Ward’s plea, Gest said. He also pleaded no contest to a charge of failing to maintain his lane, commonly known as swerving, according to a statement by the solicitor.

“We’ve seen it grow, it’s become a big part of what the PGA Tour is all about,” Finchem told reporters at Dove Mountain on the first day of the WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.

(Reuters) – The former chief of U.S. college football’s Fiesta Bowl pleaded guilty on Tuesday to charges stemming from a scheme to funnel nearly $50,000 from bowl employees to political campaigns, prosecutors said.

John Junker, former longtime Fiesta Bowl chief executive, pleaded guilty in Maricopa County Superior Court to one felony count of solicitation to commit a fraud scheme.

Junker, 56, faces up to 2-1/2 years in prison when he is sentenced on April 26 as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors.

Junker was fired last March over the donations and controversial spending after being the bowl’s public face for more than two decades.

Bradley to hold fire after Twitter users left spitting mad

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:49 am

(Reuters) – A dumb-founded Keegan Bradley said even he was taken aback by his excessive spitting as he watched television replays of his play during the final round of last week’s Northern Trust Open in Los Angeles.

Bradley ended up losing a three-way playoff for the title at Riviera Country Club, where fellow American Bill Haas triumphed, and was initially surprised his on-course expectorating had sparked widespread criticism on Twitter.

However, once he saw for himself via the telecast how much he spat during his pre-shot routine, the PGA Championship winner issued a public apology on his Twitter account.

“To be honest with you, I really had no idea I was doing it,” Bradley told reporters at Dove Mountain Tuesday while preparing for this week’s WGC-Accenture Match Play Championship.

Danica says winning Daytona 500 is possible

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:15 am

(Reuters) – Danica Patrick is convinced that if “the stars are aligned” she can win the Daytona 500 in her first attempt on Sunday.

The 5-foot-2, 105-pound Patrick said she was emboldened by last year’s victory by 20-year-old Trevor Bayne, a rookie who took the checkered flag in just his second Sprint Cup start.

She concedes, however, the list of things that have to go right is long.

“If everything goes right, the stars are aligned, I do my homework and get a comfortable car, and get comfortable with the other drivers on the track, and start earning their respect, and having great racing out there, there’s really an opportunity,” she told Reuters in an interview Tuesday.

Brodeur still on guard as Devils launch playoff push

Filed under: Uncategorized — admin @ 11:01 am

(Reuters) – For nearly two decades it was a question never asked but when the National Hockey League season began, the debate raged. Had the time finally come for a changing of the guard in the New Jersey Devils net?

Even Martin Brodeur, the man who for 19 seasons and a record 1,172 games has jealously protected that small piece of ice as his personal property, was openly examining his future prospects.

But the only people wishing Brodeur an early retirement on Tuesday were the Toronto Maple Leafs and their fans as the Devils notched their fourth straight game with a 4-3 overtime victory.

“Everybody has to raise their game at this time of year, said Brodeur, who made 29 saves to collect his 22nd win of the season. “Definitely I’m part of it but there are a lot of guys doing it at the same time.
